The Root Canal Procedure
A root canal is a procedure done in multiple appointments to remove infected pulp and nerve tissue from inside a tooth. The hollowed-out chamber and root canals are cleaned, shaped, decontaminated and sealed to prevent further infection. This restorative treatment saves the natural tooth as an alternative to extraction.
Here is what to expect during a general root canal:
- Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area around the tooth being treated. This helps make the procedure comfortable.
- To access the pulp chamber, an opening is made in the top of the tooth to remove any decayed tissue.
- The pulp and nerve tissue will be fully removed from the root canal using small dental instruments. The dentist will clean, shape and decontaminate the now hollow chamber and root canals.
- After cleansing, the root canal is filled and sealed with a rubber-like material to prevent recontamination. The material used is called gutta-percha.
- A temporary filling is placed in the access opening on top of your tooth. Later, a permanent restoration such as a dental crown will be added for protection.
- A follow-up exam is done to check healing and ensure the tooth is functioning properly after treatment. You may need prescription pain medication during recovery.
- Over 1-2 appointments, the root canal is fully cleaned, shaped, filled and restored. Your tooth can then function just like normal once again!
